Strong Verbs

What are "Strong Verbs"?

German has just a handful of really irregular verbs like „sein“ and „haben“. But that doesn't mean that all the others are 100% regular!

Strong Verbs change vowel when conjugated:

  • laufen ⇒ du läufst
  • sehen ⇒ du siehst
  • geben ⇒ du gibst

What do we have to change?

Only the vowels "e" and "a" are going to be changed.

They almost always change if they are the second letter in the verb (excluding any Prefix).

BUT: The vowels "i," "o," and "u" will never change!

  • geben ⇒ du gibst
  • fahren ⇒ du fährst
  • um | fahren ⇒ du umfährst

When do we change the vowel?

The vowels "e" or "a" almost always change...

BUT only in the 2nd and 3rd Person singular!

du gibst

er / sie / es gibt

wir geben

ihr gebt

sie / Sie geben

What does the vowel change to?

The vowel change is always: from "e" to "ie" or "i" OR from "a" to "ä"
