The Perfect tense

The perfect tense is formed with the auxiliary verbs „haben“ or „sein“ and the past participle of the main verb:

Formation with „sein“

There must be movement from A to B.

sterben → „Er ist vor 3 Jahren gestorben.“ = Change from alive to dead
einschlafen → „Du bist zeitig eingeschlafen.“ = Change from awake to asleep

Perfekt with „haben" is used with all verbs that do not use „sein“ (see above).

Additionally, ALL reflexive verbs, regardless of change in state or location, use Perfekt with „haben“.

Word order

The auxiliary verb is conjugated. The past participle remains unchanged and is placed at the end.

Er	hat	Essen	gekocht.

Yes/No questions:

Subordinate clause:
