The different tenses in the past

In the German language, there are two different tenses in the past: the Präteritum (simple past) and the Perfekt (present perfect).

„Ich habe ein Auto.“	„Ich habe ein Auto gehabt.“	„Ich hatte ein Auto.“

The Perfekt is used most frequently in German. With the Perfekt, one expresses that an action was completed in the past.

In colloquial speech, with the exception of a few verbs, the Perfekt is almost exclusively used.
