What are conditional sentences?

A conditional sentence specifies a condition or circumstance that must be fulfilled for an action to be realized.

Conditional clauses (= conditional sentences) are subordinate clauses, and the verb comes at the end. The question words used for them are: When? Under what condition? The conditional clause can be introduced with „wenn“, „falls“ and „sofern“.

The subordinate clause specifies the condition necessary for the fulfillment of the main clause. → "Ich muss meine Hausaufgaben bis um 5 erledigen, sonst kann ich nicht mitkommen".

Difference between „wenn“, „falls“, „sofern“

The difference between „wenn“, „falls“ and „sofern“ lies in the likelihood or probability. With „falls“ and „sofern“, the likelihood of the condition being fulfilled is relatively low.

„Falls/Sofern ich keine Zeit habe, gebe ich dir Bescheid!“ → Wahrscheinlich habe ich Zeit. „Sofern“ kann nur in Kombination mit einer Verneinung benutzt werden. „Falls“ kann man immer benutzen.
„Wenn ich keine Zeit habe,…“ (= Neutral)

In the past tense

When speaking in the past, it's impossible to fulfill the condition anymore. Therefore, in the past tense, the subjunctive 2 must be used to express unreal things.

„Wenn ich mehr gelernt hätte, hätte ich die Prüfung bestanden.“

Ich bin schon durch die Prüfung durchgefallen. Die Bedingung ist irreal, weil sie sich nicht mehr erfüllen lässt. → Subjunctive 2.

Word order

If the main clause comes before the subordinate clause, everything remains as usual:

„Ich helfe dir, wenn du für mich das Geschirr abwäschst.“

But: Normally, the subordinate clause comes before the main clause because the condition is the most important information in the sentence.

„Wenn du für mich das Geschirr abwäschst, helfe ich dir.“ (Verb im Hauptsatz auf Position 2 und im Nebensatz ans Ende.)

Usually, however, the subordinate clause precedes the main clause since the condition is the most important information in the sentence. If the subordinate clause precedes the main clause, the „wenn“ can be omitted. The conjugated verb then moves to position 1.

„Wenn du zu spät kommst, gibt es Ärger.“ = „Kommst du zu spät, gibt es Ärger.“
„Wenn du mich anlügst, bekommst du 1 Woche Hausarrest!“ = „Lügst du mich an, bekommst du 1 Woche Hausarrest!“

Attention:

If you omit „wenn“, it sounds more like a condition.
