What is the Subjunctive 2?

The Subjunctive 2 is one of the 3 moods (Indicative, Imperative, Subjunctive) that a verb can have. In German grammar, there are Subjunctive 1 and Subjunctive 2. Subjunctive 2 is also known as the "possibility form" and is used to describe conjectures and unreal things.

Since Subjunctive 2 is applied in many different areas, which vary greatly in difficulty, I have divided it into 2 separate lessons: Level A2 for students with basic knowledge and Level B1+ for students with advanced knowledge of the German language. This is the lesson at Level A2.

Use of Subjunctive 2

1. As a polite request:

„Ich hätte gern noch ein Bier.“ (= höfliche Bitte/Bestellung in einem Restaurant.)
„Würdest du bitte das Fenster zumachen? Mir ist kalt!“ (= höfliche Frage/Bitte, ob jemand etwas tun kann.)

2. For suggestions and advice:

„Wir könnten heute Abend ins Kino gehen.“ (= Vorschlag für die Abendplanung)
„Du solltest für deine Prüfung morgen lernen.“ (= Ratschlag, Hinweis, Tipp)

3. For wishes and dreams:

„Ich hätte gern eine hübsche Freundin.“ (= Wunsch)
„Ich wünschte mir, ich wäre jetzt in der Karibik.“ (= Traum/Wunsch)
