Subjunctive 2 with „würde“

In normal language, only the modal verbs, as well as „sein“ (to be), „haben“ (to have), and „werden“ (to become), retain their own subjunctive 2 form. For all others, „würden“ (as auxiliary verb) + infinitive of the main verb is used.

→ „Ich ginge heute ins Kino.“ (selten)→ „Ich würde heute ins Kino gehen.“

This second way of forming the subjunctive 2 is the most commonly used. In theory, it can also be used for „sein“, „haben“, „werden“, and the modal verbs. However, this is absolutely unusual and sounds odd. (Normal = Not literary)

Tip: „lieber“ is the comparative of „gern“: gern (gladly) – lieber (preferably) – am liebsten (most preferably).
