What is the Accusative?

The Accusative is also called the direct object.

But: We also use the Accusative after certain Verbs and Prepositions.

The direct object is the person or object used for the action.

The interrogative words for the Accusative are „Wen?“ or „Was?“

Example:

„Der Mann hat ein Pferd.“ (Was hat der Mann? – Ein Pferd!)

The Accusative is always used with the full verb „haben“ because „haben“ always uses a direct object.

„Der Junge schenkt einer Freundin die Blumen.“ - Was schenkt der Junge einer Freundin? – Die Blumen!„Die Blumen“ ist das direkte Objekt, welches für die Handlung benutzt wird, aber selber nichts tut oder bekommt.

The Article must always be adapted to the case!

	Specific Article:	Indefinite Article
Masculine	den Mann	einen Mann
Feminine	die Frau	eine Frau
Neuter	das Kind	ein Kind
Plural	die Eltern	- Eltern

Use as Accusative Object

In sentences that have only one subject and a Single object, the object is in the Accusative. Except: The Verb or a Preposition requires Nominative, Dative or Genitive.

„Ich habe ein Eis.“
„Er singt ein Liebeslied.“
„Er spielt den Ball.“

Most verbs use an Accusative object. This is not really complicated, because the Accusative object is usually also the direct object. Means: It is used for the action, it does nothing itself and it gets nothing!
