What are Infinitive Constructions? (Infinitivkonstruktionen)
Infinitivkonstruktionen are subordinate clauses aka "Nebensätze" made with „um…zu…“, „ohne…zu…“ and „(an)statt…zu…“
They use the infinitive form of the verb (that's where the name comes from) without a subject.
Infinitivkonstruktion: „um… zu…“
The construction „um… zu…“ expresses a purpose, intention, or goal.
The question words: „Wozu?“, „Wofür?“, „Zu welchem Zweck?“
- „Wofür lernst du Deutsch?“
„Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland arbeiten zu können.“
„Ich lerne Deutsch, um mit den Eltern von meinem Mann sprechen zu können.
In order to use „um… zu…“ the subjects of the Main Clause and the Subordinate Clause must be the same:
- „Ich gehe einkaufen, damit ich morgen noch etwas zum Essen im Kühlschrank habe.“
= „Ich gehe einkaufen, um morgen noch etwas zum Essen im Kühlschrank zu haben.“ - „Ich spiele in eurem Team, damit beide Teams gleich stark sind.“

Recommendation: Finalsätze

Infinitivkonstruktion: „ohne… zu…“
The construction „ohne… zu…“ expresses something not done (but might have been expected).
- „Er hat die Party verlassen, ohne Tschüss zu sagen.“
⇒ Er hat sich nicht verabschiedet. - „Er hat Deutsch gelernt, ohne einen Deutschkurs zu besuchen.“
⇒ Er hat keinen Deutschkurs besucht. - „Er ist Auto gefahren, ohne einen Führerschein zu haben.“
⇒ Er hat keinen Führerschein.
In order to use „ohne… zu…“ the subjects of the main clause and the subordinate clause must be the same.
- „Ich schreibe den Test, ohne dass ich gelernt habe.“
= „Ich schreibe den Test, ohne gelernt zu haben.“ - „Meine Tochter ist eingeschlafen, ohne dass ich ihr ein Lied vorgesungen habe.“

Infinitivkonstruktionen: „(an)statt… zu…“
The construction „(an)statt… zu…“, describes what we are NOT doing (like "instead" in English).
- „Ich bleibe zu Hause, statt mit meinen Freunden an den Strand zu gehen.“
⇒ what we aren't doing but theoretically could be doing - „Du solltest Hausaufgaben machen, anstatt den ganzen Tag Computerspiele zu spielen.“
⇒ we are saying what the kid shouldn't do
In order to use „(an)statt… zu…“, the subjects of the main clause and subordinate clause must be the same.
- „Ich bleibe zu Hause, anstatt dass ich in den Urlaub fahre.“
= „Ich bleibe zu Hause, anstatt in den Urlaub zu fahren.“
There isn't any such example that makes sense, but if you somehow find one, don't forget the rule: if the subjects aren't the same, no „anstatt… zu…“!!!
Recommendation: Modalsätze
Subordinate clauses with „anstatt/ohne dass“ and „anstatt/ohne... zu...“ are modal clauses. You can find a detailed explanation of their use and meaning in the lesson: Modalsatz.
