„Können“ is a modal verb which means "can".

Using „können“
As permission or prohibition:
- „Du kannst hier nicht parken.“
(Es ist verboten.) - „Unser Sohn kann heute Computer spielen.“
(Ich habe es ihm erlaubt.)
As capability or lack thereof:
- „Du kannst schnell rennen.“
- „Sie kann nicht gut kochen.“
- „Ich kann Klavier spielen.“
(Ich mache das gut oder nicht so gut.)
As possibility or impossibility:
- „Du kannst nicht immer gewinnen.“
- „Menschen können nicht fliegen.“
- „Max kann mit meinem Auto fahren.“
(Es ist möglich oder unmöglich.)
As a recommendation (often with the subjunctive 2):
- „Wir könnten heute ins Kino gehen!“
- „Ich kann dir helfen!“
- „Du könntest ihr ein Geschenk kaufen!“
As a polite request (with the subjunctive 2):
- „Könntest du mir bitte helfen?“
- „Könnte ich noch ein Bier haben?“
- „Könnten Sie mir einen Gefallen tun?“
As a geuss (with the Subjunctive 2):
When you think there is a small possibility of it being true.
A: „Wo ist deine Freundin?“
B: „Ich weiß es nicht. Sie könnte bei einer Freundin sein.“
