The Modal Verb “wollen” / “möchten”

„Wollen“ and „möchten“ are modal verbs with similar meanings: "want" / "would like to". However, there are some differences, which I'll explain on this page.

Conjugating „wollen and möchten“

* „Möchten“ is actually the subjunctive 2 form of „mögen“. But „mögen“ isn’t used as a modal verb anymore. Only the subjunctive 2 form is still used, as the polite version of „wollen“.
The real subjunctive 2 form of „wollen“ is „wöllte“. However, this version isn’t used in modern German anymore.

Difference between „wollen / möchten“

„Möchten“ is the polite form of „wollen“.

In the past tense, we only use „wollen“

  • „Papa, ich will ein Eis (essen)!“ (very demanding)
  • „Papa, ich möchte ein Eis (essen).“ (polite)
  • „Papa, ich wollte ein Eis (essen).“ (past)

Using „wollen“

As a wish or intention:

  • „Ich will nach Deutschland umziehen!“
    (Ich habe den Wunsch nach Deutschland umzuziehen.)
  • „Sie wollen ein neues Auto kaufen!“
    (Sie planen ein neues Auto zu kaufen.)

To refuse to do something (with Negation)

  • „Ich will nicht in die Schule gehen!“
    (Kind das keine Lust auf Schule hat)
  • „Jens will nicht nach Berlin fahren!“
    (Er hat andere Pläne / keine Lust.)

As a main verb (with a Subordinate Clause)

  • „Max will, dass ich das Geschirr abwasche.“
    (Max hat den Wunsch, dass ich das Geschirr abwasche.)
  • „Ich will, dass du jetzt gehst.“
    (Ich habe den Willen / den Wunsch, dass du jetzt gehst!)
