Some prepositions can be combined with a definite article (der, die, das,…) to form a contraction.
The following prepositions MUST be combined with these Articles:

in + das = ins | Ich gehe ins Schwimmbad. |
von + dem = vom | Ich komme gerade vom Einkaufen zurück. |
zu + dem = zum | Ich gehe gerade zum Bahnhof. |
zu + der = zur | Ich gehe zur Eröffnung des neuen Theaters. |
If you use these combinations separately, the article is being used as a demonstrative pronoun:
Examples:
- „Ich gehe an das Fenster.“ = „Ich gehe an dieses Fenster“
It's a very specific window that you are talking about - as if you (at least figuratively) are pointing your finger at.
- „Ich gehe in das Schwimmbad.“ = „Ich gehe in dieses Schwimmbad.“
Similarly, in this example you are going to a specific swimming pool.

In informal language the contraction is often used, but in formal grammar the separated version is officially the only correct one.

über + dem = überm | Die Drohne schwebt über dem / überm Baum. |
über das = übers | Opa ärgert sich über das / übers verlorene Spiel. |
unter dem = unterm | Luisa versteckt sich unter dem / unterm Tisch. |
unter das = unters | Ich stelle das Fahrrad unter das / unters Vordach. |
vor + dem = vorm | Anna wartet vor dem / vorm Bahnhof. |
vor + das = vors | Ich stelle das Fahrrad vor das / vors Haus. |
