When conjugating in the present tense, some verbs change the vowel from a to ä or from e to i / ie in the 2nd and 3rd person singular. These are known as "strong" verbs. Here is a list of the 30 most important strong verbs.
Note that the vowel change only takes place in 2nd person singular ("du") and 3rd person singular ("er," "es," "sie"), and only for the vowels a and e. When a verb has an a or e towards the beginning of the word and that syllable is stressed, it's almost always a strong verb.
Important: If there is a prefix added to a strong verb, it's still a strong verb!
- fallen = Er fällt.
- zerfallen = Es zerfällt.
Legend:
Acc. = Verb requires an accusative complement
Dat. = Verb requires a dative complement
Inf. = Verb requires infinitive + zu
Wo? = Verb describes a position and requires something answering the question "Wo?"
Wohin? = Verb describes movement and requires something answering the question "Wohin?" or "Woher?"
Präposition = Verb needs prepositional complement with the specified preposition.
Verb in Inf. = Verb is used like a modal verb and the second verb is in the infinitive form (WITHOUT "zu")
(Acc.) = When it's in parentheses, it can be left out (if it's obvious what is meant)
